Medicine expiration tracker apps

Seven apps that tell you which medicines at home are about to expire, with prices and features from their US App Store listings. The big difference is how you add a pack: camera, photo, barcode or typing.

Price:
Free to download; Premium weekly or yearly subscription (prices on the App Store listing)
Privacy:
Data Not Linked to You (analytics, app functionality), no tracking; no account
What it doesn't do:

How to choose

Start with how you'll add your medicines: with many packs at home, it matters that the app reads the barcode or the expiration date with the camera, because typing everything is why people give up on an inventory. Then look at when the alerts arrive (a month ahead leaves time to replace a pack) and at the free limit: 5 or 15 products make a big difference if the cabinet belongs to the whole family. If most of your medicines were bought in the US, prefer an app that reads the pack itself over one that depends on a national database.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that reads the expiration date from the box?

Yes. Among these, FarmaStock and ExpirAlert read the date with the camera, Medlet reads it from a photo with AI or from the 2D data code, and MyAidKit adds packs by pointing the camera at them.

Which apps send expiration alerts for free?

Medlet includes expiration reminders in the free version up to 15 packs, and ExpirAlert is free with ads. Pill Reminder - All in One has expiration alerts with a free version limited to 2 reminders. In FarmaStock, expiration alerts are a Premium feature.

How far ahead do they alert you?

It depends on the app. FarmaStock alerts you 30 days before, 7 days before and on the expiration day; MyAidKit lets you choose 7, 30 or 90 days; ExpirAlert defaults to 30, 7 and 1 day before.

Can I still use a medicine after it expires?

These apps keep track of dates; they don't give advice on medicines. For what to do with an expired medicine, check the label and ask your pharmacist.
